Policy makers and scientists are paying more and more attention to citizen science: the participation of ‘ordinary citizens’ in scientific research. The public can make an important contribution to sustainability issues such as pollution, biodiversity conservation, or health issues. Benefits of citizen science for policy include timely and cost-effective data collection, citizen interest & empowerment, and greater public involvement in sustainability issues. But how do you include this in policy?
In the course of 2021, ACTION will organise masterclasses in six countries (Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain & the UK), each one aimed at the interaction of citizen science with policy. These three hour classes are especially intended for policy workers: anyone who works on policy, whether at a governmental organization, NGO, knowledge institute or company. Prior knowledge of citizen science is not required: the masterclass is interesting for those who have been working with citizen science for some time and for policy professionals who are new to it.
