This week Open Soil Atlas presented their project at the Emergent Berlin Festival. The festival, ongoing through 2021, focusses on the topic of transformation in multiple senses. For the month of August’s focus on ecological change, ACTION Accelerator project Open Soil Atlas are holding a Teach-in for soil testing and collective mapping.

Held at Panke e.V., on the banks of the River Panke, which flows through many allotments in North Berlin, the event showcased the methods developed by Open Soil Atlas to check soil type and quality, and to add to the ongoing data collection for the city of Berlin. Here’s the event on Eventbrite.

A couple of weeks ago we stopped by an Open Soil Atlas workshop at community garden Elisabeet. This plot of land, an unused corner of a graveyard, is being transformed into an area to grow edible plants. The Open Soil Atlas workshop tested the soil in the growing areas along with ground that is still yet to be prepared, finding a wide variety of soil types and qualities.

Later this week, the team will be running a workshop as part of the “Green Donau Neighbourhood”. More information can be found on the Feld Food Forest Instagram page.
