The implementation of a citizen science project will rarely be as linear as our graphic representation suggests. There will inevitably be some back-and-forth between the individual steps, such as defining the research question and design – in practice, these are commonly refined together, so as to ensure that question and design are compatible and feasible. On the other hand, not every type of project will need to go through all of these steps, and even when they do, what needs to happen in each of the steps, and who is involved, will differ. We will discuss how different types of projects solve this as we go through the steps.
